With the release of the NX4 and the upcoming integration of the DYLOS composer the time has come to phase out software updates for some older hardware and adapt our support for non ONYX devices.
Release 4.2.1057 is the last version to include support for Windows 7/8 and for M1 / M2GO consoles. Future ONYX versions will also remove the support for the Enttec USB DMX devices.

For PC systems the FREE mode remains supported for Universes 1,2,3 and 4 using Artnet, sACN and Onyx USB DMX devices. It also allows unrestricted use of MIDI Notes, MIDI Showcontrol, MIDI Timecode and remote Artnet/DMX Input.

  • Windows Version Support
ONYX requires Windows 10 (64-bit) going forward. Supported are Home/Pro/Enterprise. Obsidian recommends Windows 10 Pro.
All support for previous Windows Versions has been removed and ONYX was adapted to a 64-bit application.
  • Phase out of M2GO and M1 updates
Version 4.2 is the last version to support the Martin M1 and M2GO hardware. This decision is based on the aging hardware, outdated processors and lack of graphics support for DYLOS.
Fixture libraries will remain available for these devices.
No hardware upgrade is possible for these or other legacy consoles. We recommend upgrading systems to the new NX2 or NX4 consoles.
Parts and service remain available for as long as supply lasts.
M2GO can be used in USB mode and unlock 128 Universes on ONYX PC systems.
  • ONYX on M6
Due to the increased demand to the internal graphics processing and the discontinuation of Windows 7 support the current M6 hardware is not able to support future software versions. Obsidian is designing a hardware upgrade kit to elevate the M6 to more up to date processing and Windows IOT OS support. The kit is planned to be available for purchase at the beginning of 2020 and is a user installable option.
  • Unified ONYX OS
All ONYX systems are now able to utilize the same Operating System.
The ONYX OS is supported on the following hardware:
    • NX2, NX4
    • M2GO HD, M1 HD
    • M6 (with installed upgrade kit)
  • End of ENTTEC USB support
4.2.1057 marks the end of support for all ENTTEC USB devices for DMX Output. Going forward only M-Series and ONYX USB devices are supported. While we understand that some users have relied on inexpensive Enttec devices to utilize the completely free ONYX PC version we have seen increased support and development cost to maintain their compatibility and we ask such users to consider investing into a genuine ONYX hardware device. With the NX DMX USB adapter, NX Touch and upcoming NETRON ethernet devices there are a variety of cost-effective options available from Obsidian Control Systems.
Artnet and sACN for Universe 1-4 will remain in the free ONYX version. We recommend the use of NETRON or ELATION Ethernet to DMX gateways.
  • OSC restrictions in FREE Mode
Playback control and F-Keys using OSC commands are randomly delayed in execution (Playback Faders and related controls, Main GO, Playback Buttons, Function Keys). All Group and Preset commands, keypad and parameter controls stay unrestricted to support remote focus control via touchOSC.
This allows testing and evaluation of OSC communication in FREE mode. To fully unlock third party hardware and software OSC control the user has several options:
    1. Use a console running ONYX
    2. Connect an ONYX license (ONYX Key, One-Key, NX Wing, M2PC etc) to any PC system. Once ONYX shows LIVE all restrictions are lifted.
    3. Connect an ONYX Playback Surface (NX-Touch, M-Touch, M-Play)
Please note that the NX-DMX does not unlock OSC functionality.
  • ONYX with legacy hardware
Legacy Martin license keys in older embedded consoles (Maxxyz/Plus/Compact/M1) and the Martin Ether2DMX8 are no longer recognized to unlock ONYX. Users of such devices will be restricted to the Universes 1-4 and require the use of an ONYX Key to unlock additional universes. Legacy hardware may or may not continue to work with ONYX drivers. Obsidian does not officially test and support such legacy devices and any users of such hardware assume all risks if they decide to attempt any custom upgrades. Please also be aware that is the Windows license inside these consoles is locked to the specific edition and hardware. It would be illegal to use unless a dedicated Windows license is purchased if any changes to the hardware and OS are done by the user.

The Ether2DMX8 gateway will continue to function as an Artnet device, but will not unlock ONYX PC systems.

M-Series hardware remains supported for DMX Output:  M-DMX, M-Touch, M-Play, Martin One-Key with M-PC or Martin Lightjockey License, Martin USB-DMX, Martin USB DUO DMX, M2PC (including M2GO in USB mode), M1 HD, M2GO HD, M-Series Playback Wing, Submaster Wing, Button Wing
